Because the US used the enforcement of the canal treaties as part of its rationale for the invasion and arrest of Manuel Noriega. I would propose adding a sentence such as the following to the penultimate paragraph of the History > Later developments section (I would have done this myself had the article not been protected following Trump's recent remarks):

I have just merged the History section which had grown up in this article with the already existing article History of the Panama Canal. There will inevitably be duplications. Any compressions, refinements, etc. should be made in that article. SRamzy (talk) 14:58, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
